Ukraine dominates in Croatia as Beach Wrestling World Series delivers drama, debuts and golden returns
Without further ado, let's dive straight in and see who were crowned the kings and queens of Plava Laguna.
Ukraine’s first medal of the day came in the women’s 50 kg category, where Alevtyna Liashenko claimed gold in emphatic fashion by securing victory over Justine Fanny Vigouroux within the opening minute.
The 60 kg category has been Ukraine’s stronghold for several seasons, and three of the four athletes in the medal matches once again represented the yellow and blue. However, a clean sweep was denied when reigning champion Anastasiya Kravchenko lost to Germany’s Viviane Bettina Herda in the bronze match — the second consecutive match in which Kravchenko has missed out on the podium after years of dominance. This time, it was Sofiia Kushnir who stepped up to the top, overcoming compatriot Oksana Moskalova 2–0 to take gold.
One of the standout stories of the weekend came in the women's 70 kg category, where Moldovan Olympian Irina Ringaci made a stunning debut. The five-time European champion and four-time world champion added beach wrestling gold to her résumé with a commanding 5–1 win over Ukraine’s Olena Nikitinska; she also took home the top technique award. Dimitra Androutsou of Greece added to her gold from Monterrey with a bronze here.
Ukraine’s medal streak continued in the women's +70 kg category, where Irynia Pasichnyk impressed again. She took just 32 seconds to eliminate the reigning champion, Eliana Bommarito of the USA, in the semi-finals, before securing the gold medal in just over a minute in the final against Liudmyla Tychyna. Bommarito once again settled for bronze, her second in as many events.
There were also surprises in the men’s divisions, particularly in the 70 kg category. Ukraine’s Oleksii Boruta was expected to win another gold medal, but Iranian debutant Aliakbar Mohammad Bagher Zaroudi had other ideas, winning the final 2–1. Boruta did, however, walk away with the top technique award. Moldova’s Pavel Graur took bronze.
Vasyl Mykhailov of Ukraine added to the medal tally in the men’s 80 kg category, capturing his first Beach Wrestling World Series gold since 2021 with a narrow 2–1 win over Iran’s Ali Mohammad Gholami. Azerbaijan also opened their account here, with Vusal Aliyev securing bronze.
Azerbaijan’s gold came in the 90 kg division, courtesy of the ever-impressive Ibrahim Yusubov, who overcame Ukraine’s Oleksii Yakovchuk 3–2 in a hard-fought final. Traian Capatina of Moldova added another bronze to his country's tally.
Ukraine completed their full-house medal haul in the men's +90 kg category when Vazha Daiauri beat last year's overall bronze medallist, Kyle Ferriter of the USA, to claim third place. In the final, reigning champion Mamuka Kordzaia took on the man he had dethroned: Turkey’s Fatih Yasarli. This time, Yasarli turned the tables to secure victory and bring another memorable chapter of the Beach Wrestling World Series to a close.
The Series then heads to Casablanca, Morocco, on 6–7 September for the first time ever, as it breaks into the African continent.
